Quick Product Info At A Glance
i-OCT (Octreotide acetate) is a long-acting cyclic Octapeptide with pharmacologic actions mimicking those of the natural hormone somatostatin.
Mode of action:
Since i-OCT (Octreotide acetate) resembles somatostatin in physiological activities, it can:
- Inhibit secretion of many hormones, such as gastrin, cholecystokinin, glucagon, growth hormone, insulin, secretin, pancreatic polypeptide, TSH, and vasoactive intestinal peptide.
- Reduce secretion of fluids by the intestine and pancreas.
- Reduce gastrointestinal motility and inhibit contraction of the gallbladder.
- Inhibit the action of certain hormones from the anterior pituitary.
- Cause vasoconstriction in the blood vessels.
- Reduce portal vessel pressures in bleeding varices
- It has also been shown to produce analgesic effects, most probably acting as a partial agonist at the mu opioid receptor.
Indications:
- Treatment of Acromegaly
- Treatment of diarrhea and flushing episodes associated with carcinoid syndrome
- Treatment of diarrhea in patients with vasoactive intestinal peptide-secreting tumors
Side effects:
Diarrhea, loose stools, nausea, abdominal discomfort, biochemical hypothyroidism, Gallbladder abnormalities, sinus bradycardia, arrhythmia.
Presentation:
i-OCT is available as:
Sterile 1-mL ampuls in 3 strengths, containing 50, 100, or 500 mcg octreotide (as acetate), & Sterile 5-mL multi-dose vials in 2 strengths, containing 200 and 1000 mcg/mL of octreotide (as acetate).
